Useful information for patients on Medline hospital.

Before the surgery

Tests and procedures

Tests and procedures, which may be necessary in order to check your health condition and to be prepared for the surgery.

Some of these tests, which may be necessary, are:

  • Radiography of lungs, abdomen or urinary system;
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG)
  • Blood Tests
  • Urine Tests
  • Urine Monitoring
  • Ask your physician or nurse about the special instructions before these tests

Preparation for surgery

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight before the operation. If you don’t follow this instruction, your surgery may be rescheduled for other date.
  • If you are a smoker, you should know that the non-smokers recover faster than the smokers.
  • You should stop drinking alcoholic beverages at least two days before the surgery
  • If you take any medications, ask your physician or surgeon whether they should be stopped or not.
  • Contact your physician if you have cold, fever or rash. The surgery may have to be rescheduled.
  • Make sure that somebody will pick you up from the hospital. Most of time you will not be able to drive on your way home.

On the day of the surgery

  • Follow the prescriptions for the medications, which you are taking, especially the insulin for the patients with diabetes.
  • If necessary, you may be given special bathing instructions.
  • Do not forget the instruction not to eat and drink.
  • Wear comfortable cloths.
  • Remove the make up, lipstick and nail polish.

What to bring on the day of your admission

  • Health card, personal ambulatory card, referral for hospitalization
  • Parents or legal guardian if the patient is under 18 years
  • List of the medications, which you take regularly
  • For overnight stay – necessary cloths (pajamas, sleepers) and toilet accessories

At the arrival in MEDLINE CLINIC

  • Ask for wheelchair, if needed
  • Ask at the Information Desk about the floor you need to go, and if necessary ask for assistant.
  • You will change your cloths at the hospital. Remove your glasses or contact lenses. If you are wearing hearing aid or dental prosthesis ask whether you should remove them.

Anesthesia

The anesthesia is a manipulation, which is performed before and during the surgical intervention. The anesthesia is provided by highly-qualified specialist – anesthesiologist. The patient will meet the anesthesiologist before the surgery.

Types of anesthesia

  • General – the patient is unconscious and is not aware of anything
  • Regional – certain parts of the body become insensitive.

After the surgical intervention

After the operation you will be taken for recovery at the Intensive Care Unit. In case of a larger operation, you may recover there the whole night. You will be monitored carefully during this period. When you recover, you will be taken back to your room, or you will be discharged.

Your role for your fast recovery

  • The deep breathing helps the lung function
  • Walk; with the permission of the treating physician, this will speed up the recovery and the return to your normal rhythm of life.
  • The healthy food will help your fast recovery.

Depending on the seriousness of your operation, you will be admitted for:

  • Inpatient Treatment – you will spent at least one night at the hospital, as you will be admitted on the day of the operation or one day before that.
  • Outpatient Treatment – you will be admitted on the day of operation and will be discharged on the same day.
